Part 1 – An Overview of Stomach Fat, Why We Have It, and What We Have to do to Get Rid Of Stomach Fat
An Overview of Stomach Fat for the Regular Person
This main seem a bit silly, but I feel it is important to talk about stomach fat, and what it is exactly. You see, not everyone knows why we have stomach fat. We say to ourselves, “I eat a low fat diet, I work out, why can’t I get rid of the fat”, or “I only eat 2000 calories a day, I walk, but I still have stomach fat”, or maybe this is you, “I do 100 crunches 3 or 4 times a week, but I still have fat around my middle and it is driving me crazy”! There are many reasons why we (when I say “we” I mean regular people) store fat around the middle. The first, our body has about 30 billion fat cells (I am not exaggerating for effect) and each of them is filled with a greasy substance called lipids. When you eat pizza, candy bars, chips, and drink soda, those fat cells can expand up to 1000 times their original size. The interesting thing about fat cells is that they only can get so big. Once the max out their capacity, they begin to spin off more fat cells, and they get bigger and so on and so on. The problem with fat cells is that once you have them, you can’t get rid of them, only the lipids inside them. The fat cells are there forever. This presents our major problem with getting rid of stomach fat, and not only that, belly fat is a major health concern. The fat around our middle doesn’t just sit there and do nothing; it is actually working against us. It releases all kinds of substances that are harmful to our body that can impair our ability to break down the hormone insulin (this can lead to diabetes), or increase our risk of heart attack and strokes, or lead to stress, and belly fat sits very close to our heart which can cause undo stress on that important organ and impair its daily function.
Study after study has shown that people who have the largest waists are at higher risk for life threatening diseases. The magic number is 40 inches (for men). Waist sizes of 40 or more led to a significant risk of heart disease and diabetes. On the flip side, we need to keep our waist at less than 35 inches to maximize our health. If our waist is in between 35-40, we need to get to work, shrink our waist, and get healthier. Having a trim middle doesn’t guarantee a lifetime of health, but there is evidence that a strong, trim abdominal section will reduce overall body fat and significantly cut the risk factors associated with many diseases, not just heart disease. We can lower our risk for cancer, diabetes, erectile dysfunction, and sleep disorders. We know stomach fat is bad, so why do we have so much of it?
Why Does a Regular Person Have Stomach Fat?
Let’s be realistic here. We all know why we have stomach fat, WE EAT TOO MUCH! Americans are the worst eaters in the world. Our food choices are horrible, our portions are way out of control, we go on crazy diets, and we eat to feel good or kill time. When we put it all together, WE HAVE STOMACH FAT! One of the worst things we do is we go on crash or fad diets. As we move on to Part 2 of this series, I will get into diet and nutrition in more detail. Right now I am going to tell you why diets fail:
* They typically restrict calories too severely and cause us to starve our bodies and this has a major effect on our mind when it comes to weight loss. When we are ravenously hungry, we are more likely to “cheat” or gorge on bad or comfort foods. Then we feel as if we have failed. It is a vicious cycle. My nutrition tips in Part 2 will not make you feel as if you are dieting.
* They restrict too many foods and sometimes cut out entire food groups (know anyone that has been on a no carb/low carb diet recently?) This can lead to cravings for particular foods and again leads to cheating or guilt. My tips will allow you to eat all your favorite foods (in moderation) and actually tell you when to cheat.
* They aren’t flexible and don’t fit our busy lifestyles. Let’s fact it, today’s society doesn’t allow for much down time to prepare a crazy meal. If we could afford to have a celebrity chef prepare breakfast, lunch, and dinner losing stomach fat would be a snap. Instead we hit take out restaurants, fast food joints, and prepare microwave dinners.
With my tips in future parts, you’ll gain meals, freedom, time, and best of all, I will show you how you can lose stomach fat and muscle gaining secrets.
